In The Classroom With Wyclef Jean
Donning a colorful shirt spotted with palm trees and his signature black shades, legendary rapper and musician Wyclef Jean showed up at NYU on Tuesday night in true celebrity fashion
Similar to Pharrell’s visit in 2016, Wyclef Jean held a master class and conversation about his life, work and the state of the music business.
Miguel’s newest album was expected to be his major comeback. But in many ways, it marks the 32-year-old singer/songwriter’s departure.
The old Miguel — who crooned “this love between you and I/is as simple as pie” on 2011’s Sure Thing and sported a near-bald scalp — has risen to becoming one of the R&B/neo-soul sphere’s most influential sex icons. But the December 1 release of “War & Leisure” illustrates that Miguel’s focus isn’t just on the bedroom.
Sitting in Washington Square Park with a cigarette in his hand and a blue-dyed braid extending from his head to the top of his neck tattoo, 25-year-old hip-hop artist Jez Dior exudes the rebellious persona of a modern day punk rapper. But Dior is more than just a stereotype.
“For me, music is an emotional release,” Dior said to WSN in an interview. “It’s what I’ve always used to get my feelings out. So everything I make songs about is pretty true to myself — not just about partying and girls.”
Rosenzweig, known by his artist name “Diveo,” produces pop-inspired electronic music, with about 10 albums released in the last five years and 20 live performances, always donning his colorful wig. Currently a Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at Tisch sophomore, Rosenzweig knew he had an interest in music from the first time he could talk.
In the last few years, electronic music has become the anthem for the younger generation, with artists like Skrillex and Steve Aoki producing songs that can be heard at almost any college party. It has been gaining popularity with younger crowds in the last few years for its eclectic and experimental qualities.
Annie Heslinga, a music journalist and an active member of the Manhattan and Brooklyn music scenes, believes electronic music gives individuals a unique platform of expression.
